There appear to be two problems with the Scoob's top-mount intercooler.

1) Heat-soak, due to position above engine and proximity of turbo.

2) At high speed, air-flow over the bonnet rises above the inter-cooler scoop, reducing performance and with potentially disastrous results. (The new bonnet shape and higher scoop of the new STi proves this.)

So... Why not extend the scoop forward (say in line with the blanked-off bonnet vents) and make the mouth both wider and higher?

Wouldn't this dramatically increase the flow and volume of cool air going into the inter-cooler (which by all accounts is quite an efficient unit in itself) and perhaps be as good as a front-mount jobbie? But without the lag and cost?

Of course, there's still the heat-soak problem, but I can't think that, at speed, this can have too much effect.

Would this mod work? Would it look cool (sic) or fugly? Would the awful aerdynamics knock 20mph off top speed ?

Regards,

Richard.

Hrmm in my opion it would be pretty ugly if your going to be like that why dont you just stick your whole intercooler above the bonnet heh

where is the proof that the intercooler doesnt work well at high speeds?

R19KET has data logs of his car at high speed I believe and there is no data anywhere to suggest increased air charge temp at high speed.

since his aero dynamics are the same as everyone elses, I cant see why anyones would differ.

If really in doubt, it would probably easier to fit a front mount than modify the scoop in any decent way.

Question

Adam: On light throttle loads up to around 80/85mph(true speed) my temp @ throttle body is ambient +2 to 6centigrade but @ 100mph it is typically amb +15+ & @ 120 +25+ Watching the rain, especially when using rainex leads me to believe there is a low pressure area extending forward from the windscreen which I think reduces the volume of air through the scoop @ speed. Also thje screen wipers are clear of the screen @120. Comments?

Adam, I think I recall R19KET's post, but it was only one against several others suggesting otherwise. And now Harvey has some contrary figures.

Moray, do bozz speed have a web-site? Any pictures or other info. (This would surely prove Japanese tuning companies are best )

Advice appreciated, guys.

Richard.

Harvey your are making a lot more boost at 120 or 100 cf. 85mph though = higher temp?

Hi John: I accept what you say but I feel from observations that the scoop may not be as efficient at speed as you might initially believe. Only way I can think of to help get more reliable info on this is to stick streamers at points along the bonnet & see what happens. Any other ways to prove or disprove?
Also is the new STi7 scoop & bonnet redesigned? If so why?

If I were being flippant I might suggest that the bonnet was redesigned to fit in the new lights!

One surefire way to know what the airflow is like is to stick some ribbon tails on the bonnet and drive it. I've never done this but it might be worth a try. Anyone willing to look like a muppet for the good of scoobyscience?

On a recent buisness trip abroad I maxed my car (153mph indicated) for about 5 minutes then stopped as fast as my AP brakes could manage (about 7 seconds) .When I popped the bonnet and felt my standard intercooler, the back of it was very hot and yet the front was only luke warm, probably about 40 'c tops.In my opinion it was working very efficiently.

I know this is not very scientific but I'd have thought 5 minutes would be long enough for the temps to stabilise?

this is what some japanese tuning companies do... bozz speed being one that springs to mind.
