Default whiney gear box

I've noticed that when i drive the car hard, the gear box will whine yet when i dip the clutch it stops. Would this be the clutch release bearing? If it is, is it a pricey job to sort?

when you dip the clutch you are cutting the drive from the engine and gearbox so the gearbox stops turning so it will be in the box.

sorry to butt in, but i also have the same problem with my 53 blob eye but the whine is all the time every when i flick it in neutral when driving. I got told it my be the gearbox bearings but unless the gearbox is out and stripped theres no way of telling..

sounds like the box then because when your driving and stick it in neutral the box is still turning so you would hear a bearing noise

Just had this happen to mine an just had it reconditioned, in mine the viscus coupling went bang but the noise was the bearings that had gone!

i just had a new box from subaru and it has a slight whine, i think on some boxes you will always get it. if it gets louder i will obviously get it changed over

I have the same problem with my gearbox (version 3) and have been told that it must be the bearings as well.
Is this a regular occurrence through wear and tear or is it mainly due to running higher than stock power?
Cheers,
Imran

Had a "road speed" related whine on my 2000 classic.
Skooby Teknix tell me the 5 speeds are not that great, and that 105k was a good life from a "well used" 'box.
They were pretty sure it was a 3/4th synchro hub, which fotted as you could "beat" the synchro, esp into 3rd towards the end.
Decided to cut my losses (new box c.£1500 (ie value of car)) so now have 2006 2.5 STi Spec D
