reason for piston slap on certain models

why do some models suffer from piston slap ,i have a 93 wrx and is it heard of this model suffering from this ,i havent got any noises but just askig the reason why some do .

Just had slap done on my97 (new block) and the diagnosis was a siezed gudgeon pin.

Can't see how it could have seized completely but if partially seized it would be putting excessive force on the cylinder walls and cause wear.

Not sure if this is the main cause of slap though.
