Question

Got a tiny problem with my MY95 UK 5dr.
Just had it's 81K service. Got new tyres as well.

Whenever I put my foot down (especially in 3rd or 5th), the car lurches forward (as expected!) right up until 3.5K, then losses acceleration, but the revs go up to about 5K. In the meanitme, the car is still accelerating, just much slower than usual.
Then the revs back off slightly and the car accelerates as normal.

Could this be a throttle sensor (if so, why only in 3rd & 4th?)....

DEFINITELY not wheelspin (I think - will have to investigate further though)

Is the torque produced higher in 3rd, 4th & 5th as opposed to 1st & 2nd?

I suspect that it is a sensor, but that's as far as my technical know-how goes

Help me please

Thanks in advance.

Dan

obviously its not definate, but this sounds like what happens when the clutch is slipping. worth checking with someone if you are not sure.

don't know too much about clutches......

isn't there a test you can do with riding the clutch to find out where the clutch bites or something?

What else could it be (dreading having to pay for a new clutch )

Keep the ideas coming

Thanks

you could try selecting say 3rd gear with the car stationary (dont put the handbrake or footbrake on though) and just try pulling off as normal. feed the clutch out slowly, and this will enable you to see how far the pedal comes up before the clutch bites, if its very high, then it MAY be the clutch causing your problem...no need to rev it much either when trying this. good luck

No doubt a new clutch needed - this is exactly the same problem I have been posting about this week on my car. I couldnt believe it was the clutch as it was only happening in 3/4/5 and wasnt slipping when pulling away even reasonably quickly. But, in just 2 days since it started it has become alot worse and is obviously the clutch. It happens at this point as the turbo has just got to full spin and you are at the engine's max torque figure.

I'm being quoted £645 for a Sti clutch and £750 for an AP - not sure which to go for. Scoobysport say Helix better I have no idea. As yours is a Uk car you may not need the uprated ones if you havent modified it too much.

Thumbs up

Just spoke to a mate who's a Subaru mechanic - you don't just have to buy the clutch, but also the flywheel, as usually the flywheel cracks at the same time.

Only replace the clutch and the old flywheel will write off the clutch therefore back to square one!!!!

However, he's given me a price for clutch and flywheel package that it too good to print!!!!

Has also said that the clutch doesn't need replacing NOW, but will gradually get worse ( I don't drive like a loony ), so with the impending house move (next Friday), I can wait a while (IF I can live with it!!! ) before getting it done......

Thanks for your help. Once again, ScoobyNet (and it's members!) come up trumps. Nice one.

For your guidance my car has deteriorated so quickly this week from a minor semi-noticeable problem to being unable to accelerate properly, I wouldnt plan to put it off too long. What clutch did he recommend anyway ?
