I have a '98 turbo that every now and again the speedo fails to work. Give it a sharp tap and it flicks to where it should be and is okay.

It doesnt stop once its working. It only 'fails' when the car is started.

Has anyone seen this before?

Is it a simple speedo cable that i can undo and check or swap. Does anyone know how simple it is to open the cluster up to get to the back of the instruments?

I think it is stepper motor problem which is inside of the cluster. I've experienced the same and can never fix it. Opening the cluster is a simple process just try to clear the area if it helps. Dont try to take out the speedo needle or it will gone bad.
