will a TD05H 16G kill my WRX Gearbox?
Really want a new turbo etc and like the sound of a TDO5h 16g/18g but worried it might kill my WRX 03???
When i get the car Remaped can the mapper tune the car to a certain bhp like 300-320bhp which might not kill my car?
Wish I had brought a STI now in some ways as im starting to get power hungry again
My main reason for liking the TDO5H 16G/18G is price, it seems theres quite a few around and alot cheaper than the vf34s etc.?.?

A little mechanical friendliness goes a long way also
Trevor

I shouldn't worry to much about the STI buddy, my impression of them is they're noisy, look heavy and not very quick

Nice figures can i ask how long you have been running this sort of power and have you had to upgrade the clutch? thats the sort of the power I would like but to scared im going to kill the gearbox!
gearbox and clutch are standard, I tend to just get through 1st gear and then drive hard thereafter.
I've run 340 for 12months and then last November put in water/meth injection which after adding ignition gave 350 but brought torque up to 333lbsft.
Newage gearboxes are good up into the low 400bhp if you look after them

You should be fine, I'm running a 20g on my 03 WRX and it's putting out 392 lbft (with funny fuel) and no gearbox problems in 10000 miles, though I do have an uprated clutch as the standard one started slipping when the car went past 350 lbft
i have a 1997 jap wrx with 350 bhp and 340 ft and it fine and im running a td05-18g and your gearbox is stronger then ,mine and i drive 50/50 soft and hard if you forgive the pun
I was running 390bhp/400 lbft on an 02wrx with standard box (2.5 conversion running a 20g). Only lasted a few months until 3rd let go unfortunately. In the process of installing a six speeder.
A 16g on a ty54 box should be ok though with a sensible tune.

im having my 06 wrx open-sourced mapped by 'andrewc' (
) tomorrow with a td05 on
I'm hoping for 340/350bhp ish, he said don't hold much hope on the clutch tho...
Not too worried as he maps car using open-source rather than ECUtek for £300 so leaves plenty in the kitty for a clutch

Respect to you sir for choosing open source.
Sadly most people opt for the E word as they do not know there are other options available.
I ran an 360bhp on a 2.0l for 2 years on a standard clutch with no probs! I don't launch my cars though.

I'm on the hunt for a TD05 16g or 18G now! but keep getting outbid on ebay etc
lol.
Having to much power worries me because a new/sti gearbox could cost £2k upwards, so think I will play fairly safe when I manage to get a new turbo etc, and get it remapped if possible around 330 bhp/300 lbft?? which to be honest is plenty for me on the road

Although only figures from the EcuTek software, i am supposedly at 340 bhp and 357 ib/ft. Feels nice
I dont drive like a tw@t, nor do i launch it. But i do drive it properly when i get the chance! Should be ok but like all things, it depends how you treat it.

Hi, I had my car on the dyno last week for a tweak to the ECUtek remap.
My bug wrx is running at 428bhp and 398 ft/lbs and still has the standard 5 speed box in it, the tuner says i've done well to keep the box since the engine was built 10k kms ago!!!! I tell you what, I was cringing everytime he ran the car up un the dyno though......
I know it's just a matter of time before the box gives up the ghost and people will say 'Well, it depends on how you drive the car'. Things is, why have a 428 bhp engine built and then drive the car like Miss Daisy to save the box???
Now I want to get the 6-speed box/diff/rear axle from a newage STi to complete the transformation, then I won't have to clench my ring-piece everytime I stamp on the loud pedal

If your going for that much bhp surely it would be better/cheaper to go for a sti and work your way from there??? Your gearbox taking that much power gives me alot of confidence and I agree whats the point having all that power and not using it.. obviously if you abuse any car it wont last! but standing starts are Impreza's Trump Card so not doing them here or there seems wrong
In retrospect I should've hung out for an STi but, when I bought the car, I just wanted a decent 4 door car with low km's on it. At the time I didn't realise I would get hooked by the whole tuning thing.
Now I just think of the car as a project and I'm lucky enough to have a wife that allows me the time and money to indulge myself in it. The only dilemma is what to do once I regard the car as complete......
The highlight of owning the car, so far, came last week when I embarrassed a 911 turbo away from the lights. He was giving it the berries too!

I'm running an AVO 450s 'edge series turbo, kicking out around 23 psi of boost-a-rama!
I'm led to believe that there are better turbos out there though, it just depends on whether you want quick spool-up, outright power or a compromise of both.
Check 'my Scooby' for the full engine spec.
