Default where can i get a new diff?

I have a ppg gearbox in a p1 housing.

I think the diff has given out now. When i turn right it is clunking and clicking and trying to pull the steering wheel straight.

So where could I get another diff to replace the old one?

Would any diff fit or is it specific? eg are all 5 speed front diffs the same?

Thanks
Jamie

Assuming it is the original p1 box then it would have a 4.4 final drive. We have them in stock. Do you have anyone over there in NI to fit it properly - or would you prefer someone like us to do it??

Carriage to and fro NI for the box is likely to be about 65 -70 + VAT quid each way.

Parts cost for either the front diff will be £100.00 or centre diff £200.00 + VAT

Labour would be £200.00 + VAT to fit either and gaskets and seals would be £36.00 + VAT

Call me on 01926 614333 if we can help.

thanks David.
Im going to see about getting it sorted locally first then if needs be I will come back to you

just wondering if it would be better to try and fix the plated front diff in the gearbox or replace with a standard unit

Unless you've had a plated fitted especially, along with the PPg set up, you will have an open diff at the front, that is what comes standard in a p1 box..

If retro fitting plated front lsd, you need it to be set on very low tension, or the torque steer will rip your arms off. Not a job for an amateur.

Good luck, you know where i am if you need me.

there is a plated diff in the car at the minute.
It has been sat up for 3 months and now it is clunking badly on right hand turns.

Have found a guy locally who is renowned for his diff servicing. So fingers crossed he can do the job for me.

what are the benefits of a plated front diff over a standard one David?

On a road car there is no benefit of a plated front diff over standard, as the constant turning left and right will just wear the plates and it will cease working quite quickly. Then all the cost is wasted.

On a competition car it makes the front pull in better in corners and gets traction when it would normally just spin up like a rear would without an LSD fitted.

Competition cars would get a rebuild every so many stage miles and keep the tension up better. Also with all the sliding, there is less wear on the plates as the diff will stay locked, rather than unload and allow the plates to slip as in a road car on tight corners..

ok so having the plated diff on a road car is really a disadvantage as the diff will wear quickly and have to be rebuilt whereas a standard diff is up to the task and will not need rebuilt.

I think I will just go with getting the standard one put into the car again then as the car will never see competition track use and just road use really.

will the standard diff be able to take over 400bhp without any problems?

Thanks for the info David

How long is a piece of string ? A standard open front diff is probably marginal at 400 hp it depends upon the torque.

A better bet would be to keep the plated front and set it really loose, so that it is hardly working. That way you have the strength of the plated diff but with none of the torque steer hassle that it can bring.

dont know what the torque will be, 2 litre engine so maybe 380 or so.

I will go with the rebuilt plated diff then.

Thanks for all the info David, useful as ever

Thanks
Jamie
