how to check if a box is good?

Default how to check if a box is good?

every thing is going good so far, got the shafts sorted know ect.

but, whats the best way to check this box?
it seems fine, but what am i really looking for, its a p1 box
it all sounds ok when turning. but theres a tap just as it turns.

i dont want to put the box on, to find probs
any advice will be use full.

From my gearbox engineering days unless you can put the box under load (ie fitted or using some type of turning device also with resistance on drive), then you'll not confirm it unless open it up. Boxes sound different when no load (can make clunks etc) and make noise but fine in use and vice versa...knowing history of it helps. I got burned with a no so well looked after 7000 mile 6 speed box to replace mine old one.

touch wood. it seems fine. goes into gear smoothly

has a wine, but my other box had that.
they all must have.

this so was told, has done just over 40k from new
so should last a while if true

Yeh think 6'ers do whine, mine does on motorway...tried different oils in box and diff, little change.

I'm hoping mine just needs 3rd and 5th gears changin and the syncs but that still costs...still, should be good box at the end of it, just hope dont have to burn more on it get it done right.
