Advice for a newby
Hi all, new to this site and Subarus in general. Just bought a STI RA 1996 Jap import cheap as it has problems with 4th and 5th gear. Problem is that if you change gear fast it crunches, now I was wondering can you get them reconned or should I just buy a 2nd hand one? Just to let you know it has DCCD.

Sounds like the 5th gear syncro is on the way out or badly worn. If your new to Subaru's Id suggest getting it fixed by a reputable specialist.
If your in the midlands you can't go far wrong with API in Warwickshire. Ask for David O'Brien - he'll give you some good free advice as what to do next, you'll find lots of praise on here for the work they do there.
If you buy a second hand box you have to be careful to get one with the same ratios (check the gearbox code on the side of the bellhousing) BUT you could also buy a bag of trouble to from a shady seller or one who doesn't know the history of the gearbox.
Good Luck
Cheers
Rob

Thanks Rob but I'm in Tyne and Wear, as long as I know that 4th and 5th can be repaired/replaced then I'm happy. I will have to shop about this week to find someone who will do it.
