Default Diff droning, Help and advise needed

I have a 1995 WRX with a rear end droning noise. It starts at about 15mph. It gets louder as you get faster.
I have been told by another member it will be the diff or a wheel bearing. It does not seen to come from one side. My mate has been in the back tying to listen to which side it is coming from. He can't tell.
I put it on my mates car lift, with all wheels of the ground and ran it in 1st and 2nd gear. The droning did not start. Can any one help. Is there a method of checking if it is the diff, wheel bearings or something else.
Thanks.
