Default Gearbox whine?

When the car is in neutral its fine, then depress the clutch, still ok, but then put it into gear with the clutch depressed there is a whine. This stops instantly when the car is taken back out of gear though. There are no problems or noise when the clutch is taken up, changing gear or driving normally, this only seems to occur when stationary and the transmission is hot.

Any ideas folks, is this something to worry about?

when the clutch is pressed down the gearbox is stationary and not moving, even when put into gear and the clutch is down because you have cut the drive from the engine to gearbox. Sounds like clutch release bearing.
