Hi Guys,

A few may remember this post

But to re cap

the car started to get more and more difficult to select second gear when the car was cold. It started out that it would go into gear fine when going from 1st to 2nd but not from 3rd to 2nd when slowing down in traffic

Now its diffiuclt to get into second in either direction and to make matters worse the car now clunks into gear and it gives a sharp jolt through the gear stick.

After about two or three miles the gear box is perfect in both directions (it is also occasionaly fine when cold but not very often).

I'm running out of ideas (and money but thats a different story ) and i'm getting to the point that i'm scared to drive the car much more in case i really damage second gear.

To date the following has been done with no or little effect

New box oil (made the most noticeable difference but didn't fix the problem)
New clutch and fluid

The linkages were inspected on fitting the clutch and are in excellent nick as was the fly wheel.

Now i'm still thinking that it could be the syncro or selector in the box but i'm not really sure also i have been lead to believe that the 6 speed STi gear box is a strong piece of kit and knowing the previous owner of the car i am very confident that it hasn't been harshly treated so i'm a little surprised - is it a common fault??

so is it likely to be the snycro's or selector?
Something else?
Anyone else had anything similar?

how much would i be looking at to get the box fixed?

has know one had a similar issue with their STi 6 speed box?? I can't be the only one surely??

Also anyone ogt a rough idea what it would cost to get my gearbox repaired (if that is whats at fault)

just ball park figure will do - (just need to know if i'm looking at £100's or £1000's)

the only problem is warwickshire isn't exactly local to me. would prefer somewhere a little closer to south yorkshire - does scoobyclinc deal with gearboxes at all or would they contract the work out?

Did it do this before the clutch was fitted ? As the jolt thing suggests that the clutch is not clearing properly and if that is the case, you will damage the synchro cones inside.

If not, it will be a dodgy synchro cone and it will need the box to bits and a new one fitted. Sooner rather than later, because it could get very expensive if you continue to drive and damage the actual synchro hub or the gear.

Potential cost for just the remove, strip, replace one cone and back together about £700.00 + VAT

Not less if done here, possibly more once stripped.

It started of as being difficult to get into gear - i.e no crunching or jolting and then about 3 days before it was due to go in for the clutch change it started to crunch into gear - the new clutch did notight to improve it. the new gear box oil made it slightly easier to get into gear but didn't rectify the issue

Had the same problem on my last car and it was the synchromesh.

All sorted now guys!!

It turned out to be the synchromesh and cone around second gear and also the nylon tips on the selector fork were starting to wear quite considerably so they have all been replaced.
Also because the box was apart the syncro's around 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th were replaced as they were around £25 each so it seemed silly not to change them whilst the box was stripped although there wasn't any problems with them.

Total cost was just under £1000 including VAT

Drove the car back from API yesterday with no problems and into the office today and again no problems - everything is back to how it should be

The guys at API did an excellent job with excellent service! Can’t fault them and would recommend them to anyone.
