The car that you have will give the biggest clue. Theyre seldom changed because theyre matched to the front diff; which is integrated into the transmission.

Thank you for your post, the biggest problem I have is this is the second gearbox I have installed on my 2 door type r, I know its not the same gearbox as what is listed on the ID plate, I was told by the previous owner that the rear diff if 4.444 ratio, but Im having the same problem with this gearbox aswell its leaking loads of oil, Im wondering if the rear diff is fighting the gearbox then coursing the seals to go?? Really dont know if that is possible??

Wondering if you had any idea.

Thanks for your reply

Is the gearbox the DCCD type? I think the Type R's had DCCD and the R180 rear diff, could be a reason but I am not an expert in this area.

Id agree that its probably a 4.444 final drive, but to be sure whats the gearbox code on the chassis plate and whats the code of the box you have fitted?

Morning

Thanks again for all your help on this This is were Im confused lol The previous owner had a 6 speed gearbox and matching diff, he then stripped this and installed a TY752VBCAA (now have 2) I know this isnt to correct box for the car. But the guy also told me that the rear diff is matching 4.444 so I didnt think anything of it, but it seems funny how both gearboxes are leaking alot of oil Hoping I hadnt done much damage to the new one. But then again it was second...

Thats why Im thinking that maybe the diff and gearbox arent matched, is there anyway of telling? Would there be any tell tall signed from the car, I would imagen that the 2 diff's would fight each other some how??

Thanks again guys

On the one reference I have found on paper, that code is listed as a 1997 JDM Legacy GT-B transmission. It does suggest that it has a 4.444 front differential but Im hugely sceptical because all of the ratios are missing and Legacys dont have manic gearing (and they certainly dont have DCCD).

Id guess that these have been used as theyre much cheaper and easier to find than the correct part. Id suggest looking for TY752VB5CA (correct) or TY752VB6EA (from an STI Type-RA) with a front LSD too.

Id still suggest calling David O'Brien, even if you arent planning on spending any more yet: Im sure that he'll be happy to help.

Thanks for your help, do you have a contact number for David? Was thinking about putting the right box back in but I have been quoted 600 plus VAT just brought the box listed above to keep the cost down

If you can help me with his number I will try and call him tomorrow for some advice.

Thanks again everyone

JDM Impreza WRX & WRX STi Ver.III/IV MY97-98 TY752VBCAA 3.166 1.882 1.296 0.972 0.738 3.416 1.000 4.444 Viscous

JDM Impreza WRX STi R & RA Ver.III/IV MY97-98 TY752VB5CA 3.083 2.062 1.545 1.151 0.825 3.416 1.000 4.444 DCCD (35:65)

Thats what I have found out so far, I can see the final Ratio's are both 4.444 but different ratios in the gearing leading to the final drive, do you think this could be my problem?

Next silly question I have is....how do I know what diff I have? Im pretty sure its going to be a 4.444 but how do I know if its a dccd diff?

If the previous owner had fitted a 6 speed plus matching diff, then its either a 3.54 or 3.9 rear diff that was fitted - depending if he had a UK or JDM 6 speed.

Has the rear diff been changed since then? because if it hasn't then its one of those ratios

He told me that the rear diff had been changed back to the 4.444 matching the new gearbox, if it was one of the other ratios would I be able to feel the front / rear wheels fighting each other??

Can anyone tell me if the front drive shafts between the STi and Type r might be different and leaking oil, Im running out of ideas at the moment

Thanks Again Guys
