Default Transmission whine

I have an MY98 model uk turbo 2000,and have been experiencing a whining noise for about 18 months on over-run,it makes no difference whether it is in any gear or whether it is coasting in neutral,i have had it looked at by a garage, thinking it was the front diff, they seperated the diff from gearbox, and found no fault with the front diff, but they found a couple of broken teeth in the oil of the gearbox, and oil from gearbox had a metallic film in it,now i know it doesn't look good for the gearbox, but it goes into every gear fine, and has no problem staying in each gear, what i would like to know before i spend on gearbox, clutch, and flywheel,is there any way of disconnecting propshaft to tell whether the noise is coming from the front or rear of the car,eg making it front wheel drive for the purpose of putting it on the rollers,to check where the noise is coming from ?

how did they manage to remove front diff for inspection without finding out where broken bits were from? gearbox needs to be removed and split open to get at front diff.

I don't know, they had said if it was the front diff, there was a bearing service kit to replace any worn bearings.
