How can I tell if my ECU has been chipped?
#1
Hi all,
I've just fitted my Dawes device last night (at long last) - thanks to positive feedback in GridLock Mikey's post I've decided to take the plunge.
Now the reason I ask about my ECU, is on my first run to calibrate it, I saw about 22psi before I hit fuel cut
I've got a MY97 with no other engine mods but a full decat and an ITG filter.
What's got me suspicious now is the previous owner had fitted a bleed valve (incorrectly!) which I had my service centre remove when I discovered it limited my peak boost to only 8-9 psi, restoring to factory levels.
Could a Superchips type device be lurking in there? Am I right in thinking they fool the ECU into seeing less boost than is actually present?
How can I check this? Should I whip it open and peak inside?
Oh I have now dialed my Dawes down to a more sensible 14-15 psi at the mo.
Cube.

If you found a fuel cut then it is not a Superchip AFAIK. You could tell if the MAP reading into the ECU was altered by comparing the boost shown on a select monitor with that of your boost gauge. A select monitor check is a good idea anyway after fitting a Dawes to check everything is OK.
It is possible that your car is standard. You can sometimes see quite high boost before it cuts - it also depends on how long it was high. You can sometimes have a high peak but no cut if it doesn't last long.
On my MY00 PPP I eventually found it to be about 20 PSI held for about 4 seconds.

Thanks John, that's re-assuring to know.
The last time it was checked with on the select, my gauge under read by about 1psi.
Yeah about 4 seconds was what I got too. It was both exhilerating and mildly terrifying to see that much boost.
You have the PPP tho, as far as I'm aware I'm supposed to have a standard ECU.
How I can identify my ECU?
Thanks,
Cube.
