Water spray on a front mount ? are you mad ???

Spose I might be, well, has anyone heard of it ?
I was thinking of a DIY version using the existing headlight washer system. (Light washers no good anyway).
Do any of the well educated scoob chaps on here know if this has ever been done ? I have never seen it in mags or video, only on top mounts.
I can't really believe that it would make much of a difference until hot summer (?)

One thing to bear in mind is that (AFAIK) your headlight washers use the same water source as your screen washers, not sure if spraying screenwash over your engine would do it much good (should keep it clean through )

I will look at some evo tests and see if there is any benefit to water spray on FMIC.
As for screenwash, I have thought of this too, I would probably mount a second resevoir for the FMIC.
Does anyone have an evo with water spray that could give some input to this thread?

I've got an Evo and its got waterspray on it as well.
Only ever really use it before a good hard blast. That way the water is alreasy on the i/c and provides the cooling effect when the heat from the boost spikes appear.
You can always then add a blast as you're running just to keep everything cool. I've got a digi thermometer measuring intake temps and so I can see when they are going hot and give it a blast to keep it all cooled down a bit.
Don't know how effective it is but I've never seen intake temps above about 30 deg C whilst driving hard. But then again, maybe that's because I can't drive that well

P.S. This is the reason that you see some scoobies at Santa Pod before a run with ice packed into the top mounts to try and get everything cool before the run. I would imagine you could achieve the same effect on a front mount with a good blast from a hosepipe before going out.

water spray should be used as the temp rises, not before it.
It isnt a reservoir that will keep temps down.
Front mounts already keep temps down very low. Water spray is an extra useful addition.

If you use the water spray as the temps are rising then the water doesn't have time to minimise the temperature spike as it happens i.e. the temp spike has already happened before the water has chance to absorb the heat. By adding the water to the intercooler before the temp spikes you have the water on the i/c ready to soak up the heat as the temp spike begins rather than trying to cool it as it happens.
As well, the high airflow through the i/c when moving fast means that the spray doesn't distribute well whilst driving and the majority of it will be blown away from the i/c before even having chance to settle on it.

Thanks everybody, I think I'm sold !!!
Going to start the design soon, will go for a boot mounted tank and use the headlight washer jets (new ones) with a simple (thats me) timer circuit to "pulse" every 15 secs (variable).
Will post something when its up and running...or wont if it dont.

I'm surprised nobody has pointed this out yet but the headlight washers spray a jet of water whereas Water spray jets are "foggers" which create a fine mist.....you wanna get some of these if you're gonna do it...

Thanks Matt, I didn't know that, but it does make sense though.
I presume that one can obtain these as "spares" from one of the kit manufacturers.
Have to give it a bit of research before I get going.

Yes I have this installed with my front mount, it was originally put in for the top mount but I thought "why not" when I changed over. maybe thats why I only get about 6 deg temp rise typically, the charge temp actually falls first before rising again, with it off (read run out of water) it just rises. Run mine of my boot mounted Forge tank.

Cheers all, I think (maybe), I will look at prices of complete kits and make a decision based on that.
Given that I have just done over 3 THOUSAND POUNDS on bits, a few more quid ain't going to kill me ! (wife probably will).

As well as making it automatic, it's advisable to have a switch you can flick it on and off as well so that the pump doesn't eun dry when the water runs out.
If you want, I've got some info at home on how to build a DIY intelligent i/c waterspray. I can send you the details if you're interested. It also has part no.s for nozzles etc etc.
