Gearbox or Flywheel
Hi guys,
I need some advice here,when changing down from 4th gear to 3rd i get quite a bad judder from the car. If i give it a little rev before changing into 3rd it's ok,no judder.
I had an exedy clutch fitted and had my original flywheel skimmed by a local machine shop.
It has done this since i had the job done,so will this just be a new flywheel that i need or could it be a gearbox problem.
Like i say i can get round the problem by giving it a little rev before gear change

How long have you had the clutch fitted?
It's more likely to be the clutch than anything else especially if the flywheel has been ground. I suggest you speak to your clutch supplier as there have been issues with clutch judder on some Exedy clutch assemblies.

The clutch has done about 4k since fitted,i think i'll give my supplier a ring in the morning to see if anybody else has had this problem.
I wish i had fitted a new flywheel now so i could rule that out

If the engineering shop doing the flywheel does this kind of work all the time it is unlikely to be the flywheel.
We don't turn the Subaru flywheel as it is very hard and the tool can chatter. We found that out years ago but on some other makes the flywheel can be done on a lathe which is quicker and cheaper. All our Subaru flywheels are ground and we now have an attachment specifically for these.
Ask your supplier if they have been informed of judder issues from Exedy and hence the new type four spring plate.

There IS a judder problem on SOME Exedy clutches. This has been recognised for around two months as far as I know. Obviously, stockists are somewhat down the chain and they will have to move existing stock before they see the new product coming through.

i have exactly the same problem. I had a exedy uprated organic clutch fitted last month and am experiencing the same judder issue as you. mainly changing down to 3rd or 2nd and pulling away from first and into second....i have found that blipping on the down change or changing down at higher revs gets rid of it but its starting to pee me off, never had it with the standard clutch before.

On the true uprated friction plates there is no cushioning like there is on the OE ones.
They are fast road clutches, and as such can sometimes be a bit juddery.
Some places try and overcome any judder issues by selling the uprated kits with a OE friction plate
We don't do this as the clutch won't be upto the torque/abuse the uprated item can take.
Put in context, you've got a clutch that is capable of dealing with drag times comparable with supercars.
I have the same clutch on mine and you can drive it around easily enough everyday and it will still take some serious abuse.
