Whos had there D/Valve shimmed??

Im very close to buying 1 at the mo and i was thinking of getting it shimmed, i would like to know exactly what the difference is from standard to shimmed i.e sound difference.
I know the spring is tightened up but will this affect the car in the long run or is it totally safe.
I know its a simple question but i just want to be sure before i go ahead.

No long term effects to date - makes car sound like a WRC - go for it.
You will need an uprated spring as I well - I needed shims and spring to get it just so - depends on boost level!
