Default Rear drive shaft help...

Could anyone tell me if the retainer clips that hold the drive shafts into the rear diff are supposed to be located on the shaft prior to fitting or in the diff? As when I removed the shafts they stayed in the diff, I was under the assumtion they were to stay on the shaft so it took them out but the shaft will not locate with them on... Although when they are in the diff they dont seem to hold the shafts in.

The car is the version 4 type-r with the equal length shafts... I think! I have searched around and can not find anything conclusive. Any help would be greatful as i have already ripped half my hand off trying to fit it...
