lol

clinic fans will say sc series is best and lateral fans will say that md series is best.
There have been numerous attempts at side by side comparison and as yet, to the best of my knowledge, nothing has come to fruition.
So your guess is as good as anybody elses Im afraid.

In the interests of declaring my bias, I run an md321T

MD321T here. This is a proven and is acknowledged by many a tuner as a fantastic turbo. Not saying that SC isnt a good turbo, but more people are using the lateral MD321 series.

I believe Mocom has done some comparisons, the outcome was that the MD321 spools 500rpm earlier due to its superior ball bearing design. The other turbos make similar power though.

ah right, explains the 91dB
I might need to go back to 2.5" rather than 3" I have now.

A 321 T is a 450 BHP turbo with the right mods. Maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. While I have been impessed with the 321T on 2.5s I have not experienced one on a 2 litre that was particularly impressive as yet. That capability is more than you might want to run on a non forged engine. A good TD05-06 20G will do around 400 bhp and be a lot cheaper.
Unfortunately, choosing an 05-06 20G that is actually a good one is not always easy as there are a lot of under performing examples out there.

Mocom's test was not against the SC range it was a comparison to the FP Green and the difference was 200 rpm iirc.

I have run the FP Green, HTA Green and now an MD321 - all are great turbos. The ball bearing design does mean they can spool marginally sooner but once going, this is not noticeable from my experience.

Having said that, in my experience with these three turbos - ALL of them have made 1.5 bar by 3000 rpm and held that (and more if you want) to redline. How much earlier would you want boost ?

As Harvey says though, spec the turbo to your engine and your use.

Good information there.
Can you clarify please :

Are these 2.5 applications?

Source of 05-06 20G. I will come back shortly.

Duncan, which exhaust housing did the FP Green and HTA Green have 7cm2 or 8cm2? (on your 2.5 )

Both were the larger 8cm housings. The 7cm would spool up quicker but run out of puff at the top end on a 2.5. They would work well on a 2.0 though IMO although I obviously havent tested it.

I ran a 7cm green on a 2ltr.

Was very very good to use, much more potent than a 20g and spooled just as fast.

M535. We were building 05-06 20Gs from donor 05 turbos and 06 kits but have difficulty sourcing these now. Everyone produced over 400 bhp, the last one fitted having been mapped last weekend.
I also have good experience with an ST380 and ST420 from Scoobymania/Area 52. Have a word with Jason there and he will give you all the information.
The ST380 on my STi 3 Wagon produces 371 bhp at 1.45 bar. The 420 will produce 420 bhp but at higher boost. On a 2 litre it would be difficult to persuade me not to stick with the 7cm2 housing.
If you want a number for Jase, drop me a mail/P.M.

Just to confirm that Mocom did a "back to back" with the MD321T, and FP Green.

The MD321T spooled up circa 400rpm earlier, and both turbos made nigh on the same power at the same boost.

What graphs don't show, is throttle response, and this is where Mocom said the MD321T, & FP Green are chalk, and cheese, with the MD321T being far more responsive. Zak still runs the MD321T.

Andy Forrest did a back to back between his AF TD05-20G, and MD321T, on his own car, and said that they spool up nigh on the same, but the MD321T goes on to make circa 60-70BHP more. He still runs the MD321T.

But these are circa 450bhp turbos. The quicker spooling MD321H would be a fairer comparison to the TD05-20G, but consistantly makes circa 400bhp @ 1.45bar, and on built engines running more boost, 420-430bhp is common.

Again throttle response is really sharp, and owners coming from a VF 28, or 34 turbo generally say they the MD321H feels no more laggy low down, but just pulls like a train to the red line.

Mark.

I have no experience of the MD321T on my own car but after testing and mapping the larger brother of the MD321T (which is still in development) it is a very impressive turbo at the top yet still spools as quick as any other turbo that I have had on my car. I can therefore see what Mark (and Zak @ Mocom) means about response from the smaller T.

I have had it on the dyno today for initial testing and already it is showing good figures. I believe that there is more to come too - once testing is complete I am sure figures/spools times will be released.
