Why's my boost so low ??
#1
Folks,
Can someone point me in the right direction here ....
I've got a MY 95WRX with ITG panel Filter & Scoobymania Backbox and I fitted a boost gauge a few months back, after reading other peoples posts about boost pressures etc... I've notice that mins is considerably lower.
It boosts up to 10PSi and then drops, the car sometimes feels as though I'm driving a 2.0 Sport and not a Turbo.
Is this a serious case of Turbo Lag or is there something I can check to try an resolve this bloody nightmare.
Cheers
O.M.

First thing to try would be to reset the ECU, it could be that you had some sh1tty fuel and the ECU has compensated for this.
Tank it up with SUL or Optimax, reset the ECU and see if it improves.
It should boost to 14/15psi and hold at about 12/13....
Hope this is a start?

Sounds like the diaphram in your actuator has gone soft and is not holding boost. Either that or the boost control solenoid may be stuck closed.
Open the bonnet and rev the engine. Stick your ear over the drivers side suspnsion strut (above the bronze solenoid). If you can hear a constant ticking the boost solenoid is OK. It will only tick as you raise the revs from idle.
You could adjust the actuator rod length buy shortening it a couple of turns (it's under the turbo heatshield). This may not solve it but might improve it.

Check you have a restrictor(small brass olive thing, squeeze the pipe and you'll feel it) in the small vac pipe between the turbo nipple and T piece, which splits to the solenoid and wastegate actuator.
Phil.
(I get 10psi with no restrictor, btw)

You won't find the restrictor there on an MY95.
The restrictor is between the Boost Solenoid bottom port (the lowest one of the 3) and the intake expansion box.
The restrictor on an MY95 has the reverse effect compared to later models.
If the restrictor wasn't there you would build boost quicjer and maybe boost very slightly higher.
It may be blocked tho' so worth a look.
