Piston melted and turbo blew on my unmodded Late MY98.
Had new short engine and turbo under wtee and told to
sttick to 4k revs for 1000 miles and then get a checkup
and oil and filter change.

What is the running in period supposed to consist of ?
Is it adsiseable to mod the car within the first 1000+
miles of new engine ?
What have others done and what do you think ?

Cheers,

Colin....

Thumbs up

Hi colin when running in your engine 4k sounds good, use engine to
brake when possible, try and keep engine under load as much as poss even if it means driving in the lower gear what i mean about using engine as brake is use the gears to slow down dont go up hills in to higher gear, dont leave it ticking over just get in it and drive this will glaze the bores up and you will end up with a smoker, this may sound strange but use a poor grade oil when running in, because the silicons and other additives will form a protective layer on the bore and the cross hatch that beds the rings in will be less effective. This will not carbonise the turbo
as it will not get hot anough under your driving conditions.I would change oil at 500 miles and again at 1000, dont do any other mods until run in.What you are doing is bedding the rings to the bore and bedding any imperfections on the crank pins to the bearing. Steve.

Cheers mate, will stick to that advice.
Just been told that after the 1k miles I can drive normally.
I will still refrain from mods for a good few months...

Regards,

Colin

I agree when running the engine in you should load it up, but I was always told to never ever use the engine as a brake by gearing down to slow down.

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Agreed re the engine braking ... also try and "feel" for the engine. As and when it starts to loosen then lightly loaded higher revs don't hurt but forcing it will do harm. Use a very good quality semi-synthetic oil during the running in period, I would actually consider that 2500 miles is more like it with progressive increase in loads coming once 1000 miles have been covered.

Cheers for additional advice.
The engine has been loosening up slowly and I have naturally tended over the weeks to go a bit beyond the 4k but without forcing it. Thankfully would appear to be doing what I should by fluke. Cheers again, Colin...
