Sorry but another Gearbox Question
Guys i have a 99 uk turbo, currently running 320bhp...303lbs
which i am very happy with considering all the problems i have had since buying it a few months back.
the next step will be sorting out the gearbox to be able to take more power. as i am aware and been told that the std box is good for 350/350 after that it becomes hit and miss depending on previous abuse, millage etc, so before i take the engine further i will make sure the box can handle it. I am aiming for the 400Bhp mark with the equivilent tourqe
I assume the 6 speed is the best road to take? rather than the PPG Kit as this is a lot more expensive but what i cant work out is what
a) will i need to get?
b) what is the right price for it all?
there are 2 auctions on ebay at the moment asking £2500 for a kit. but after reading on here people say £1500 is the mark as 2.7k is about the mark for a PPG kit.
any pointers help appreciated.
thanks
steve

Good luck i had syncro damage on mine at 33,000mile running std power on 5th gear were a bit iffy goin in 5th at first then got to the point where i couldnt get 5th at all-i wouldnt like to rate a uk box to that if im honest not for it to last very long anyway.
Wether i`d put a 6 spd in would depend on the ratios think i`d prefer a 5spd, prob an sti 6 box/diff.(dont know how hard they are to get hold of 2nd hand)
At the power your aiming at i`d prob go ppg-leaves ya scope for further engine mods if ya wish without worrying about the box so much.

thought the sti 6 box was still not rated much higher than the uk box, thought they were all good for thr 350 mark.
ok i dont launch of the lights etc, but i want to be able to if i want. i dont see the point in having a car that you have to go gentle with, for example if i was to get caught in the moment and floor it off the lights or from 2nd to third flat to the floor and the box give up, due to having too much power that it could handle then in my eyes there would be no point in having the power there as you cant use it.
i thought the 6 speed was as strong as the PPG kits?

You will be waiting a very long time to find one under £1800!!!
The person who got one for £450 must have the best luck in the world! All so the person selling it was a fool! IMOA
Good luck mate

I went for the PPG kit for mine...
1 - It is lighter.
2 - It is stronger.
3 - For high torque figures, you have plenty to pull it through the gear. 6 speed will mean you are forever shifting.
4 - You can build the box to your desire (straight or helical cut).
The price you have of 2,700 for PPG kit is a bit optimistic.
I think most basic kit prices are 2,000+vat. Then, you have gaskets/seals/oil (100).
Depending on current wear etc, you may need to replace bearings, billet forks (£320+ for 1-4) etc.
You may also need an uprated clutch, at least £500+ depending on the final power you want.
You may need a donor box (casing), depending if a kit is available for yours, add another 150.
Then of course, you have labour to remove and fit box (4 hours), plus complete the build (8 hours). So looking at least 500+ for labour unless you will be doing it yourself.
Can't comment on 6 speed prices but you will need to change the rear diff.
Good luck!

Hi guys,
I have a UK classic running 342 BHP with significant engine mods (full rebuild, forged etc etc)
Now I dont launch hard from the lights etc and we think it had a new STD gearbox about 50K miles ago, but I have never had a single issue with the Gearbox (Touch wood lol)
Mind you when mapping the torque has been kept at about 300lbs, which is probably the reason there are no issues.
I have been told from various people that the standard Gboxs are good for 350 and can take everything (within reason) but if you go above this you need to start picking your time and place for using the accelerator or probelms will occur etc?
Could be wrong as I usually am lol

If you don't mind me hijacking the thread a bit for a minute, but it IS gearbox / PPG gear related.
Got a PPG gearset off Mark @ Lateral Performance.
Fitted to a donor TY754 gearbox for my classic scoob by Rally Colin Minton / Thames Valley Motorsport ( I had broken 3rd gear ! ) and I am running near / 400 bhp / 350 +lbft .
The new gears Whine a lot, oK in OEM 5th.
How do you PPG guys ( mine are syncro and Helical ) find the noise from yours ... OK for daily driver ?
Mine aren't, sound worse than straight cut ! The gearbox builder agreed when I took the car back last week. Mark @ Lateral suggested I get other users opinions as he had had no complaints of them being that/too noisy ??
Thanks
Neil

About right, use it carefully and the std box may well last a long time.
My 1994 classic wagon, with 110,000 miles on clock - I have had it for 80,000 miles, 60,000 of those running at 360 bhp / 325 lbft, and had no probs with early classic gearbox.
Fitting a TD05-20G, 850 injectors, FMIC etc. late 2006 should have added about 50 bhp/lbft ( not rolling roaded ) and broke 3rd gear inside a year, a month after 2007 ScoobyShootout running a 12.6 second1/4 mile at 118 mph terminal speed.
So yes, there does seem to be a certain point where he torque will damage the 'box, that seemingto be around 350 lbft.

I have straight 1/2, helical 3/4 and P1 5th.
1st has a quite loud whine, 2nd is quieter and 3/4 are much quieter still.
I use my car on weekends, and even then not all the time so can't comment on daily driver but I have no problem with the noise. I really don't find it very loud.
If yours aren't straight cut and still make a loud whine I'd defo get it checked out.

its not normally the total power figure as such that kills the box (unless its way high), it tends to be the shock loading, so if your not launching it then you'll be a bit kinder to the box, but if you miss a gearchange (which if were all honest then we all do from time to time), then you'll just spit it out
