Crunching in Third Gear

Crunching in Third Gear
Hi All - I am a newbie and hope that you can help me?
I have recently bought an M (1995) registered Impreza Turbo 2000 (estate) and when I drive slowly, its fine, but when I accelerate (even a bit) and go for third gear it crunches.... I know the obvious answer is to not accelerate but sometimes you just need to, don't you?
I realise that it is probably either a new gearbox or rebuild and thought that I would try 'the experts' first for advice.....btw is has covered 71K.
Thanks Sam

Try changing the gear box oil best to try Castrol Syntrax quite often cures the problem did on mine and many others still might be the old oil in there worth a try other than that it is a worn syncro on third , give API a ring for advise and a good price .

Really appreciate your advice ..... I will try the gearbox oil first - otherwise will give API a call.
Being a girlie in a scooby - sensible advice can be hard to come by!!

Third gear has a double syncro and ive found on both of my subarus that its the syncros that cause this "crunch" exactly the same issues as i was having and the dealers rebuild the box for me under warranty, but i am not saying you need to do this mind!. heheh
Dave at API will advice if hes back from holiday, but my advice is nto to leave it too long as i did with my currant car and now it needs a rebuild,
