Urgent gearbox/clutch advice needed, please!!
Hi,
I bought a 1996 turbo wagon last week with a noisy gearbox. I also bought a re-conditioned gearbox from a "v" plate impreza turbo car and a new clutch.
I fitted it all yesterday but when I went to reverse out of the garage I cannot select any gears with the engine running!!!
I don't think the clutch is disengaging, please help??
What could have gone wrong??
The gearbox that went in had more fixing holes than the one that came out, other than that everything went relatively straight forward. I also fitted a quick shift linkage but don't see how that can be the problem.
Anything I can do or has the box got to come back out ???

Should I have put the thrust on the cover plate first then assembled the pin and clutch fork once the box was bolted up??
No.
You mount the thrust in the fork with the box off the engine, put all the pivot pin back in etc.
When you have everying onto the engine you push the fork arm towards the bulkhead and you will feel a definite 'click' as the multi fingeres spring clip engages with the clutch cover. When 'clicked' there will be some movement, about 10mm iirc and the long light guage spring off the bell housing to the fork arm takes up this play.
On my first clutch chamge years ago I did not know this sequence, but managed to fiddle the fork onto the thrust bearing anyway and all was well.
