Default Whining PPG helical gearset from new?

While I am on for a change ...

You guys with PPG gearsets - helical / syncro, how noisy are they in 1-4 gears, and what sort of noise?

I get bad whineing in all 1,2,3,4 gears, worse in 2nd and particularly 3rd gear. Drowns out exhaust !!!!

Any ideas? Apart from soundproofing ... the whine attracts attention as I potter through the vilage ... it's a daily driver car this!

Any different install setings - shims etc. for the PPG against standard gearset ??

Thanks

helical are suposed to be much quieter than straight cut, are you sure you def have helical in it? did yu ask for a ppg gearset and they put a straight cut in?

this is mine with a straight cut box in it, well the whining one anyway lol

Video of Scooby crescent - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

if its as loud as that then i guess you may have got straight cut not helical cut

Vulnax:

I drove a ppg helical/synchro box a few months ago and it was as quiet as my Type R stock box. You must have the straight cuts?

Default Whining ppg gearset yes ...

Well, the 2 cars that whined, that's how loud they sound in the car on load and overrun, and do sound loud outside as people turn to look, and I have a quiet exhaust ( stealth wagon / 400 bhp ish! hehe ) .

Gearkit came from Lateral, been onto Mark but not asked if it was helical or straight as receipt said helical ( I peeped in the delivered gearset box before they went to garage for fitting and some cogs had angled teeth .. guess helical ? ) but only real ideas are poor install / shimming etc. which garage and gearbox builder don't easily agree with ...

They offer to get box out and strip / inspect ... but 200 miles away from me...

I may as well mail Mark again to check they were helical not straight cut ... was told to expect a bit more mechanical noise but not a straight cut whine noise!!
Bit worried with the cost of the cogs if this 2000 - 3000 miles road use with big whine may have damaged surface ??? tooth to tooth fit etc? so even if fitted properly or other problem fixed they are ruined?? Doh!

I'll see and let you know!

That's an idea, was thinking of that after the above link, maybe record it on the mobile phone and transfer to PC / internet and post up on here ... inside noise only I guess!

I have some rough files from the mobile phone, sat on passenger seat as I went 20 - 45 mph in 2nd and into 3rd, then slowed down. My web host won't accept .AMR files!

I can mail 'em to any one interested, or if some one tells me what to use I could perhaps convert the format.

OK converted the files to MP3. Now need to sort out hosting them ...

Not sure if this helps:

YouTube - Subaru Impreza - 0-100mph in 8secs

In-car video of Helicut 1st/2nd and straight cut 3rd/4th.

Exhaust might drown out most of the noise.

Straight cut whine is very noticeable. I was quite shocked/amused when I first drove it

yeah sounds def like straight cut to me

best bet ring up who supplied it and check with them, if it turns out to be straight cut and you don't mind the noise then your on to a winner cos it'll be a stronger box
