Default So where are we with clutches?

A search on here only finds posts from two years ago

My car's clutch occasionally slips but sometimes I can't even MAKE it do it

What sort of clutch ought I to be thinking of for a 98 UK car with around 300bhp?

The OE item has done over 90,000 miles with some towing of a caravan, but I don't indulge in many traffic light grands prix

What would be the price of a standard OE clutch kit and the price of an Excedy Organic clutch?

Any good?

SUBARU IMPREZA STi WRX & P1 EXEDY CLUTCH KIT 230MM on eBay, also, Subaru, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 28-Nov-07 11:40:47 GMT)

Probably save you a few quid? Although obviously easier to take it to somewhere like API or Scoobyclinic. The clinic's price for clutch swap seems more than reasonable - uprated fitted and supplied for £495?

Not a chance! I'm handy enough, but NOT in this weather, and I've no cover from rain. I'm afraid my "crawling under cars in freezing and wet conditions" days are well and truly over

I've been quoted for an Exedy organic uprated clutch by API, and also told to invest in a lightened flywheel at the same time.

A local guy will fit it.

Two questions:
1. Has anyone any bad experiences of lightened flywheels?
2. Is it true that the engine has to come out to fit a clutch?

I agree. Would much rather pay someone to do it.... not a nice job.

Some people find it easier to take the engine out, if its done on a driveway/on the road.

A lightened flywheel is a OE flywheel that has weight removed from it. It is limited to being able to remove x amount of weight before it become too weak and prone to shattering. They normally come in at 8kgs.

A lightweight flywheel is an aftermarket part, usually made from billet steel/chromoly. They are specifically designed for the weight and are usually available from 4kgs to 6kgs.

If you don't go light enough you may not notice the difference, if you go very light you will have to get used to it a bit and medium speed takeoffs are more difficult. Some people experience a slightly rough idle on the lightest end of the scale, but I can't say that I ever have on mine (runs an OE crank pulley though).

I've got a proper lightweight flywheel in mine and get on with it really well. Has been in there for a couple of years and will stay in there. Daily driver + 'occasional ()' drag.

I can supply forged lightweight flywheels from under £200.

Question

Thanks for the reply. I was quoted around £120 for one on exchange, lightened to around 7kg.?

My car has a VERY poor tickover when stone cold, so now I'm really not sure.

Probably best to stick with an OE weight one in that case. Just make sure you have it skimmed (local machine shop will do it for around £20).

Might be an idea to get to the bottom of the tickover problem too.

does that mean that my poor tick over from start would be the lighweight flywheel added by the previous owner? Tick over is bang on once warmed up, just a bit 'lumpy' from cold.....??
