Default Gearbox and Rear Diff Q

Im thinking of changing the box in my V3 Sti for one out of an Sti RA for the closer ratio's & faster accelaration etc, can I get away with just changing the gearbox or will I have to change the rear diff aswell?

Cheers

Possibly.
The Sti V3 and the RA of the same year used the 4:444 diff ratio. However either side of these models and the diff could be 4:111 and you cannot mix those parts.
Best to get the gearbox and diff together, and you will also have the benefit of the RA possibly having a plated LSD.

Default Ratios?

i am thinking of doing the same swap as i have broken the box in the (rally) car once and don't have a great deal of confidence left. does anyone know the ratios on a 97 type R box - is this indeed super strong as i have been told?
thanks in advance for any help

The 97 Type r has the stronger TY754 case, but I think the guts are much the same as the STi series in general.
Wizzo at ratios /availability is David at Welcome to the API website as he has all the parts too!

Be careful with your gearbox selection as most RA's and Type R's had DCCD fitted and the STI did not. You then may have a problem of wiring loom alterations etc.
Also what year is your car as different years have different final drive ratios as Graham has mentioned.

The SPDA gearbox code guide could prove to be very useful .

Cheers
