GEAR BOX NOISE IN 3rd 4th 5th
PLEASE CAN ANY ONE HELP.........?
My car is a subaru impreza turbo 2000 1999 t reg...........the past few days i have noticed a noise which only comes in 3rd 4th 5th and now very very faint in 2nd...only when im on the throttle.....the noise does also come back only very faint when slowing down in gear...
the noise is like a metal ratcheting sound when on the throttle...
i can also get it to make the noise when moving along and im in neutral by moving the gear stick from left to right in the " H " patten
can the diff be removed, but leaving the gear box in place?
how hard is it to remove the gearbox?
are they expensive repairs?

hi not sure what the problem is but its easy to swap gear boxes only takes about 3 hours to swap one if you dont mess about. diffs and driveshafts can be removed easily with box still fitted

i seem to have the exact same problem in my my99 t-plate scooby too
noise i louder the faster your going, mainly in 5th but lower down too. and if you move the gearstick across when in gear its loudr and sounds like its grinding a little.
ive just started a thread about it too, as im thinking a rebuild eventually, unless its something less sinister - which i doubt knowing my cursed car

ive had a tinker the last few days .......ive changed the gearbox oil which came out like brand new.....i drained it into a clean bowl for inspection..no metal ....put some fresh oil in....and a gearbox treatment..mollyslip... made the gears change much better but i still have the dam noise
ive now taken the car to a gearbox specialist to let him have a go....he didnt know for deffo what it could be......diff or gearbox or what it sounded like..........told me only a strip down would solve it.....and around a grand for a rebuild.......thats when i felt sick......i dont mind taking the box in and out its parting with a grand......
the car is still in my garage and i dont know whats for the best....

The short shift and lock is all to do with the linkage, which will stay on your car, no extra expense there

Sorry to say it but it sounds like it could be the main gearbox bearings... had the same issue with my WRX - cost me £1500 for a full rebuild, thankfully the dealer paid as I'd only had it 3 months.
One thing to think about if going for a 2nd hand part is that it might have it's own issues - though most dealers will take it back if it's faulty, just means extra work swapping the boxes over

Before you go buying another box, just how bad is it? Mine has now made the same noise for around 2 years and is only very slight. Its not got any worse so its staying put until breaks.
Also an API box would be a very good option, not just a second hand box, a tested box.
Just my thoughts.
Wayne.
