Question

Interested to know to compare to my top mount.....

1) Ambient Temp
2) Inlet temp on steady cruise, say 80mph in 5th (and what revs/boost that equates to) - after heat soak (if any) has been got rid of (this can take over 5 mins on my top mount )
3) Inlet temps when on full boost in 3rd, 4th and 5th (and what max boost)

I'm gonna be doing some testing this weekend and would be interested to compare results....

Ta,

Matt

P.S. Stef, you're running a FMIC on the TD04 arn't you? Do you measure inlet temps?

Hi there,

I`m running a BPM topmount with TD04 at 1.25Bar.

Took some turbo out and inlet temp data last summer. Ambient was about 25-27Deg C. Most readings in 4th gear.

Between 2500 and 5000rpm turbo out was at about 100DegC and inlet about 42-46DegC. However as soon as boost is maintained above 1 bar above 5500rpm, Turbo out starts climbing rapidly, max seen was about 160, max inlet 55-60DegC. All these on the M-way.

The real eye opener for me was a tightish B-road blast in 2nd / 3rd. Here inlet temps where in the mid-50 to 60 range. Water injection me thinks!

Heat soak seamed to go pretty quickly. Inlet temps would match turbo out temps at idle. Within 1-2sec the inlet temps where back down.

We calculatred intercoller efficiency as about 80-85%,m which is pretty good......

Thanks for that - V.Interesting.....

Anybody with FMIC's got any data? (Adam/Scott/Craig/Mike T/Stef/Moe/Mark)???

Cheers,

Matt

inlet temps never go above 40 degrees with the pace regardless of ambient.

ambient at cruise.

you asked what boost at cruise is, answer is vacuum at cruise! temp at cruise is pretty much ambient plus or minus two degrees depending on humidity/rain etc.

1.5 bar over boost holding 1.35 bar yields around 34 degrees with my intercooler during a sustained run when ambient is about 10 degrees.

Turbo outlet temps (big turbo) rarely rise above 80 degrees. Push very hard and I can hit 95 ish.

still havent calculated intercooler efficiency but have noted that bobs temps from the aps front monut seem to be very good indeed. far better than the pace can manage. I put this down to its larger capacity. Despite have a smaller core area, it has twice the depth meaning the air throws through it slower giving ti more time to cool down. Bob reports temperatures at high boost a little more than ambient, suggesting teh intercooler is working very well indeed. He has reported these before, but I cant find where.

Thanks for that Adam. That's quite impressive performance compared to a standard Top Mount!!!

On my standard UK Turbo, at cruise (steady 80mph on the motorway), with an ambient of about 1-2 degC, I'm seeing about 18-20 degC. Just goes to show how much difference a FM can make !!

On your car, this sounds like it would be about 4-5 degC? And presumably, as boost and speed increases, the gulf will increase.

What would also be interesting is a graph which shows turbo outlet temps, Intercooler outlet temps vs boost and speed (for a car with a standard TM and one with a FMIC).

Cheers,

Matt

with my aps on a uk car with vf23, link and running up to 1.35bar

the charge temps were few degrees over ambient on normal cuirse diving around 22-27 in the summer. on track the most i saw was 41 degrees after 15 laps and once i removed the number plate on the same track day i did not get any more than 36 degrees

the highest i have ever seen was on the rolling road and that was 42-43 degrees

nlet temps on cruise are bout ambient give or take a couple of degrees.

Went up to 55 degrees at 1.8bar on the rollers.

On the road at max boost it's never reached 40 degrees.

Cool

Matt, havn't got temp data yet, FMIC fitted over Christmas hols.

Hope to "plumb in" a few sensors over the Easter hols...time off work an' all that.

Good luck.

Basically no more than 6 degrees above ambient at the moment following a 7000 rpm run in each of 3rd, 4th, 5th (private road) at 1.4 bar boost. At the time max temp was 15 degrees at the end of that. (testing an alternate map)

In the warmer weather ... no more than 32 degrees, not just my car but on three that I "played" with.

cheers

Bob,

What FMIC are you talking about? APS? That's a very impressive performace!!!! Do you have figures from when you were running your top mount?

With the standard Sti V top mount doing a similar test I would see about 30/35 degrees rise, temps would end up in the high 40's low 50's, on a rolling road the top mount temps started at 32 and ended up at 75 !!! Haven't had it on the roillers with the FMIC yet.

Yes its APS plus their induction kit in the wing, I was impressed with a couple of other cars I played with which is why I went for it as opposed to Pace or HKS, Intercooler finning is really strong as well and not likely to get damaged by stones etc.

Thsts not to say the other makes aren't as good.

I finally got around to getting a inlet temperature probe on the other day. It was just a limited test because the thermacouple is'nt long enough at the mo and the gauge was stuck to the windscreen but:
with an ambient tamperature of 12 degrees i was seeing 25 degrees in normal driving and in about 3mins of hard driving the temperature crept upto 40 degrees

I will have to wait a couple of weeks to get my extended thermacouple for some more tests but i did'nt think these initial tests were too bad

Scott
01 de-cat, ect, 1.2bar boost and standard intercooler
