possible rear diff rumble?
hey! i'm running a 99 "T" 2000 turbo. she's running at 280bhp and is pretty quick! the problem i'm having is at high speed. when i hit around 110mph (naughty i know, but its a scoob!), i get a rumbling sound coming from the back, and the back of the car slightly shakes. nothing to vigorous, just noticabl. as you increase speed, the noise gets slightly louder, and the vibrations a little worse. however, when you back off the gas, the noise goes away. that makes me think, if it were the diff, then surely the diff would rumble all the time?? the car has a full system magnex on, and i dont think its that... not checked anything yet (eg, tyres, balance etc etc),
any ideas??

I get the same sort of rumble mate......but I don't have to be goin as fast as 110mph to get it to do it. I can be goin along at about 60 or 70 and it'll just rumble. The back of the car don't seem to shake at all tho, it's just a noise rather than a vibration. If I take my foot off the throttle or press the clutch, it disappears.....but the minute I'm back on the gas it'll rumble again. Weird!!

I thought that too......so I tried going along at about 70mph and putting my foot on the clutch (so the rumble stops) and then just revving the engine, and trying to hold it at the same revs as when I was actually in gear etc. There is no rumble at all with the exhaust, not at any revs. Sounds like tyres.....but why would it only do it when ur accelerating? Spoze that would kinda make sense tho. I dunno

when you rev the enjoy with the clutch dipped, the engine sint working.. when you re-apply the clutch, the engine then has to work, which makes the note change. thats prob what the noise is, the engine pulling, if this makes sense!!

Aye yeah lol. It's annoying! Altho....I forgot to mention that when I first got the car and took it to subaru for a service.....I mentioned to them about the rumble so one of the mechanics asked me to take him out for a spin in it and show him the noise I was on about. He said it was completely normal. He did say it was the diff. He said they sometimes make that noise under load, and it didnt' sound anything out of the ordinary to him. I dunno how right or wrong that is, but hey!
