Default Fairly certain my rear diff's on its way out, but could there be another problem...

Hi,

I've been experiencing a whirring (whining) sound coming from the back of the car above speeds of 30 or so with or without the clutch engaged, so I'm fairly sure this is the rear differential is on it's way out.

But, more recently I've been getting a "DU DU DU DU" type sound that increases with speed, which initially only happened on left hand turns over about 20, but now seems to be getting worse and happens in a straight line (or turn) at any speed, but dies away a bit over 80.

Could this be a noise from the dieing diff also, or could it be a driveshaft or something else?

The car is a MY01 WRX which is coming up for 90k miles.

Cheers, Mike

Bearing, be it diff or wheel, more likely wheel I think as the diffs tend to whine forever.

From the information given I would look at the wheel bearing first especially as you say it was worse when cornering.

Cheers guys, will check the wheel bearings before I do anything else.

It'll have to go in at some point soon anyway as there are a couple of other niggly problems aswell like suspension clunk.

Just need to figure out where to take it. I think API is my nearest specialist, but is a bit of a drive as I'm in Watford.
