How much!!!
I was having problems with 5th gear dropping on my MY99 Turbo and reading the forum found the answer, mainshaft nut had come lose. So I booked it as quickly as I could to the main dealer were I brought the car. I thought that it would be a easy job maybe 4 hours at most. It took him 13 hours to do, they ONLY charged me for 8 hours plus gaskets and oil but it came out at £700. Is it really how much it costs?

Did the dealer have the decency to pull your pants back up for you after he yanked them down.
Lesson learnt never never take a car to a stealers for any major work unless its under warranty, oil and filter max and thats just for the stamp.

Just to make you feel really good about this:
We have a car booked in for exactly that job.
Remove and refit the back of the box £100.00
5th gear synchro ring IF NECESSARY £ 25.00
5th gear IF NECESSARY £100.00
5th gear synchro slider IF NECESSARY £100.00
all plus VAT done whilst you wait, drinking my free coffee and bacon roll.
This cannot be done however, on the TY 752 - 98 or earlier boxes as the selector roll pin that needs to be removed to get the back of the box off cannot be got at with the box in the car.
Sounds to me that your dealer took the box out. BUT, I reckon that if he had, he would sold you a clutch too whilst it was out. So maybe not.
Tough luck mate, lesson learnt; dealers = sub-standard work most times and sky high prices.

Just to make you feel worse, I've also just had the 5th gear crunch fix done on my p1 by ZEN, but.... they also fitted a Dccd box & transfer gears ( that I had sourced), and wired it all up including the ecu, dash lights, roller switch, etc for all in within a hundred quid of what you paid...Sorry
Great job from Zen by the way - can't recommend highly enough.

David will do about anything competently on an Impreza.
I know as I'm a customer.
I had the same original 5th problem in 1999 on my UK turbo in 1999!
Fixed by the main dealer (as was then) Andrew Burt Subaru ,under warrenty while I waited.
The only dealer I would trust ever. now sold up (Bug Eye sales did for him).
