needing some help ppl my car has been diagnosed with a faulty centre diff and to save money im looking at sourcing a diff and fitting it myself.

ive got a couple of mates all mechanically minded and they are going to give me a hand with it,

first question is : can the diff be taken off the car with the gearbox in place or does the gearbox need to come out.

second is can it be done without a ramp.

i was originally told rear diff was away which would have been easy enough but it looks like a bit more work involved.

can anyone give me a step by step guide to taking it out and maybe a few pics.

also is there anyone selling a diff cheap.

 

Let us know where in the country you are and then a supplier for the diff can be suggested.

The box needs to be removed from the car. You can do it on axle stands but its not the easiest of jobs. I did mine this way when changing the clutch.

IC, downpipe, starter motor, gear linkage inside car, dog bone to bulk head, front ball joints to ease driveshaft removal, driveshafts, propshaft etc. All need removing.

ok i am in scotland near glasgow and the car is a 99uk turbo the reason i ask is some ppl say you can do it with the box in place and others say it cant

 

for a 99 you can remove the centre diff in place.

 

thats the kind of answer i was looking for sponners, is this speaking from experience or do you know someone who has changed it in situe, was it a hard job. what is the process, does it just slide out or does it involve a big hammer

also is it a case of just taking off and other one straight on also do i need a sealer to seal the diff back on.

 

I've also removed the centre diff in place, the higher you get the car the better, There are a couple of copper spacer washers which can be checked and you will need to set the endfloat as well. Make sure you drain the oil first. Nice little job.

 

ok bit more technical now is the copper washers what stop the oil from leaking out of the box, also what is a endfloat and where is that located i think i might buy a haynes i wonder if i can get a step by step guide in that .

 

Haynes don't do a manual for impreza's.

If someone can say that the pre-97 centre diff removal is the same as the facelift 97-00 as I don't know? Then this link may help you if it is the same..
