Question

Now that I have a Link system, and do not have to worry about damaging any sensors etc, what options are there for induction?

I have seen the APS kit, which looks good, but I would like to remove the air flow sensor, to save it for later. Rather then just getting a blank made up to sit in its place, are there any further gains to be had from fabricating a complete intake? Some japanese cars run with no filters and the turbo open to atmosphere - this looks cool but probably cuts life in half! (and the rest!)

What other feeds are there from the induction pipe to other parts of the engine I would have to worry about?

The other consideration is any intake mods would have to allow for the possible fitting of a fmic later.

I have the aps cold air thingy joined to the satndard inlet pipe by a section of polished tubing cut for me by hayward and scott. The maf sensor is out of there.

This gets the pipeing well out of the way of the fmic piping.

I woud never run without a filter. Sod the performance, they simply aren not that restrictive, a bit of grt in one of the bores will seriously restrict your performance.

I suppose it depends on the MY of your car.

I have a MY94 and used the aluminium cone from a Pipercross induction kit for the same year which had a round inlet.

Used a "Green" shielded induction filter with a 80mm inlet along with some Samco pipe to hook it all up.

it is a MY99, UK car.

Adam, the jap cars mentioned did not all go completely without filters, some had chicken wire like mesh over them to stop gravel size stones going in...

but retains the maf!

and unfortunatley think of all the lovely heat that shiny pipe will retain once it exposed to under bonnet temperatures for some time!

At least it will keep the poor cold winter air warm before it has to go to work in the engine .

Saying that I have no doubt my shiny pipe will have exactly the same effect, but I had no choice. It was that or tumble dryer ducting which as I found out before doesnt take well to having the dump vave release through it. BANG!

but he is getting a link - so that is no worries about the maf!

shiny pipe is nice, just like the 12foot of piping that comes with the fmic we both have!

I have the link already, so getting rid of the MAF and improving the intake is the next 'to do'.

I was kind of hoping there was something which ran direct from the turbo, cutting out the black elbow that goes under the intake manifolds. This 90 degree bend looks pretty restrictive?

What I had thought about was, if i had to get a section made up for the MAF anyway, was to fabricate something all the way through, from the turbo, so the filter sits in the wing like the APS.

What about the Samco inlet pipe? I could run that from the turbo, under the inlet manifold to a straight(ish) section of S/S pipe into the wing? then stick a big K&N on the end?
