Have you considered checking the oil level! (both gearbox and final drive)
If the noise is coming from the rear, it could be a diff. bearing on it's way. Spiral bevel gears are designed to run in one direction, so will be noisier when reversed and the axial thrust on the bearings will also be reversed. If the bearing has axial play the gears will not mesh within tolerance and noise will increase.

Very easy! If the car is not too low, you can even do it without raising it (which you don't really want to do as it needs to be level to check the oil)
The rear diff has a drain plug and a filler/level plug. You will need a 1/2" socket drive to undo the filler plug (this may be rather tight!) The oil level should be at the hole. Top-up if reqd. until the oil starts to dribble from the hole, then replace the plug (clean it first!)
Semi or full synthetic 75w/90
I assume you're OK with checking the gearbox level (dipstick below the intercooler)?
