Default Gearbox Rebuilds

Hi
Stupid question coming up.

When you rebuild a gearbox is it just a case of removing the old gears/synchros and replacing with the new ones?

Is this the sort of thing that can be DIY'd?

If so where do you get the gears from and how much do they cost (roughly) ?

Thanks

Contact David on Welcome to the API website one of the very few who actually do box rebuilds regularly.
David has a technician full time doing boxes.

That Box was originally an Api recon unit,
Might be worth mentioning.

How do you know when a box off fleabay is decent. If all goes well it's a quick fix if not you have to take the box back out, try and get your money back and then find another! Be careful.

Cheers

can get expensive if you're replacing gears & syncros, definitely not a DIY job as you need a press to remove/assemble the shafts with the gears on (that alone might cost you 100 quid to have done). Syncros cost from anything like 100 quid for 1st gear and gradually get cheaper the higher up the gears you go. Gears themselves, not sure on but you can be sure they'll be dearer than the syncros.

Cheers,
David did mention that to me when the car was in for the rebuild, sadly its just running too much power now for the standard box, I'm trying to decide what box to get and its proving to be a pain. too much £££££££

Thanks for all the other advice lads.

JBJ:
We all know THAT feeling.
In the end you (like I will too) end up at www.zenperfromance.com and write a £3K cheque or sell the car!

There is a lot to be said for the 6 speeder.
The only downside I can see is the extra weight (I race my car so important) and it is a very tight fit, but you only fight it once!

A very viable option.

Cost of 6 speed kit around £2k

Fitting/conversion around £500

Total £2.5 + VAT

PPG complete set up around £3k inc fitting

Not a lot of difference
