Hi,
There's a funny burning sort of smell when idling after driving.
Any ideas, as you all know I have been running (foolishly) 0W 50 oil which I am about to change !
Any ideas

I'd guess it the Rocker Cover gasket.

An hours labour + parts and it's fixed!

I get this with mine. Had it checked, gaskets and breathers etc all OK, no leaks here or anywhere else. The car does not use a drop of oil but does smell after being on the motorway or being driven hard. Doesn't seem to matter what oil is in it, and hasn't got any worse with time. It was suggested to me that it was a bit of oil that dripped onto the heatshields during servicing, it can take a while to completely burn off. The smell usually goes away after a couple of minutes idling before it is switched off.

edited to fix me p's and l's

I have recently replaced the clutch on mine, not because it was slipping (not that I could tell anyway) but because it was so high you could almost breath on it and it would engage!

Nast smell as well...

Mark

I think my clutch is OK. It bites about half way up and no sign of slipping. I never thought about it smelling after a fast run though, I suppose it could be part of the smell but it does not smell like the usual burning clutch smell. I will bear this in mind next time though, when that is likely to be I don't know because I can't seem to get past 30mph on the M62 these days !!

Regards

Ken

I've seen this on a couple of cars. Check around your power steering reservoir, Is there a slight weep from it. I had this on mine, worn gasket at the bottom meant fluid was weeping slightly down front of engine and onto the manifold - hence smell.

Might be wrong but wipe up around your reservoir and see if deposits appear.

Cheers

Rich

Rich,

I have that too. On mine I repeatedly find a few drops of burnt out oil in the nooks and crannies of the engine casing. I looked at the hose but could'nt find the leak there so i'll look closer at the gasket.

cheers,

Paul

I think I have found it.
It looks like there is a leak where a pipe enters the sump, the pipe comes around the front of the engine. It looks like oil has been dripping down the side of the sump then uder it and on to a cross member. Theres oil everywhere !
New pipe I guess. I dont have much experience of engines, its amazing where the oil gets to. !?

Unhappy

In the area your on about it sounds very much like your front crank oil seal is leaking, quite common.
Unfortunately for such a poxy little seal its a bigish job i.e same as timing belt which you might as well change at the same time.
