Both gearboxes need to have pretty much the same serial numbers The number is found on a small white sticky label close to where the starter goes in.

UK boxes are TY752 or TY754 VN xxx

JDM boxes are TY752 or TY754 VB xxx

A VB type box will not fit easily into a UK car.

If both are VN then the 754 will go into a 752, but fitting a 752 into a 754 is bad move as the older box [752 ] is fragile.

Fitting the 754 in place of a 752 is quite simple. You will see that the later 754 box has more bolts available to hold it in, no worries, just use the ones that line up [ 4]

There is a problem for one of the starter bolts and where your old 752 had a stud to locate the starter, there is now no hole available for it. You will need to drill and tap a fresh hole in the back of the engine block to use a bolt.

OR as others do, you can just fit the starter with one bolt and providing it is done up tight and located correctly does not seem to cause a problem. I am not advising you to do this. But our customers do it as they tell me that they do.

Good Luck David APi

I have a 99T uk car and my gearbox started TY754, check yours does as you may not need at drill the hole in the engine.

Still changed it for an STI 5 box and diff though

Well here's another vote for getting it rebuilt instead of buying a second hand replacement. I haven't the willpower to go through the whole sorry tale I had when trying to get my busted WRX back on the road, but suffice to say, in the end I had API rebuild mine and it came back great. I had thought it would be a lot more to have it rebuilt, but compared to getting an unknown second hand box for £300-£400, it makes sense.
