hello all.
this is my first post here and i hope you can give me some advice as a prospective subaru owner.
the car i'm thinking of buying is a late 90's old shape legacy 2.5.
problem is i hear there is a big question over the reliability of both the manual and auto gearboxes. i've read that the front diff leaks oil into the gearbox thus ruining both. also that the clutches shudder and make them difficult to drive.

i also went to see a '00 2.5 yesterday and it was a total heap. it was a manual and had part of the clutch cable assembly hopping around on top of the box and had a bad shudder. it was also overheating! (clean for 00 he said )

any truth to this??

i always admired these cars and thought they had near bulletproof reliability. but this car clearly hadn't held up.

any advice in general?? if i can't get a reliable desirable car i'll just have to buy an avensis and nobody wants that.

Hiya mate,

Best advice I was given when buying my Impreza was "always buy with a full service history, especially one from a specialist"

Also, generally, you can tell how it's been look after by how many receipts for work carried out and parts bought the seller has!

Hope that helped
