Question R180 (MY00 Type R) diff handling characteristics?

I'm considering a complete R180 rear drivetrain (diff, shafts, brakes, discs, hubs...) to complement the already installed 6MT DCCD conversion in my MY98 wagon.

What is the specifications of this differential? Can anyone describe the handling characteristics? I'm not very familiar with LSDs, all I know is that my stock R160 was too weak (it would spin the inner rear wheel when cornering). I just found some threads where the locking was described as "aggressive", just what I need.

Hans-Martin, hiya - how ya doin'

It will be cheaper in my opinion, to have a plated LSD and a pair of drive shafts to match and fit it all in your R160. The only gain using an R180 from your point of view, in your car, would be a great deal of weight..........

I may have an R160 set up that you can install yourself. Richard Dowsett [ Dowser on here ] did it in a domestic garage in Switzerland when we sent him one out a year or two back.

Unless of course you need the 2 pot hydraulic calipers to stop the car better, [ it seems to me that you stop pretty well - but mostly when you hit the scenery ]

Sorry I could not resist that.

Saw your vids the other day, I reckon you need to set up a visit from some of us UK guys to have a weekend when we can come over stay in decent hotel, have a beer or two and go ice racing - that'd be fun AND I am sure there'd be a few takers.

Let me know if we can help re the rear diff thing.

Ah, but we set them to whatever setting is appropriate for the customer and what he is using the car for. I agree when they come in from Japan they are usually locked up pretty tight and are useless to drive around on.

But there is a shim pack available as an STi Sportpart that allows you to reset the diff tension to whatever is ' right '

Not a lot of people know that! [ and less what to do with it ] !!

I thought the R160 diff and drive shafts would be took weak when combined with DCCD and a clutch-based differential?
I'm trying to plan ahead, as I know my engine can't last forever with the abuse it gets (currently at 180.000 km) - and it will NOT be replaced with a new 2.0 engine. David, I'll give you a call when I need the 2.5 STI conversion

I'd be happy using what I am offering at up to 400 hp in my car as a properly set up R160.

Unless you are extremely aggressive with the car in which case it'll have to be a full R180 set up.

I have just sold 2 R180 set ups one the Seth Efrika and one to the Caribbean so i do not have one at the mo to offer.

Soon have more in from Japan though. Cost for ALL of it 1000 GBP

I changed mine for the R180 with bigger brakes, different drive shafts and the mounting etc...I love the way she power slides from the back end on corners, much fun without the lock to lock action of previous
