3rd and 5th gear crunch on 6 speed...
Just quick one re uk 6 speed...
My gearbox is sweat at normal/semi-gentle power levels but will crunch sometimes going into 3rd and almost all the time going into 5th when booting her hard. Is it right that my high speed synchro mesh is worn but the low speed is fine?

my 03 sti crunches at speed in 6th - ok below 3000 rpm
currently the box is in bits waiting for Subaru Warrenty inspector to assess it as being warrentable.
fingers crossed-
its damned annoying - i suspect its a weakness in this box. i will kick up a stink if they try and charge me!!

Mine's weird though as she's perfectly smooth in all gears lower down the revs, but boot her and she'll always crunch 5th and sometimes 3rd. I've heard they have a low and high speed synchro, so must be high speed on mine damaged.
Can you let me know the results (and costs if they'll tell ya)? cheers

Cheers for update...
If you can find out how much they've had to change just for one gear crunch, that would be a big help....but cost alone is great. cheers

1 step closer- the subaru warranty inspector finally approved the gearbox to be fixed FOC today - parts have been ordered.
I'll ask price at collection- buti think API gearboxes will be a sight less expense than main dealer extortinate labour rates

I must admit not impressed with the Subaru Warranty as regards Speed, 2 weeks to get the inspector moving - and 1 week delay in getting 1 'nut' from the Franchise.

The box was put together today - i phoned and asked the dealer to check the wear on clutch. Repply was almost down to the rivets.
So as the box was out -\i ahave asked them to fit new set and save a wad of labour.I would have fitted aftermarket improved cluch - but i have nearly 10 months of warranty remaining.
Looks like another 3 days of 2 litre normally aspirated Forrester driving.

i had some good and bad news today.
good news - cluth came overnight and gearbox fitted - service mgr said gear change smooth as silk
bad news- while shuffling the cars about one of the mechanics reversed anothr blue sti into my drivers side wing. So they ordered a new wing for mine and a bumper for the other guy.
promised me it will as good as new on friday.
i didn't give the guy any grief- accidents do happen

Finally got my car back today.
Thry estimate the costs of doing the box £1100, it also cost these guys £450 for a new`wing and paint job.
It did pay for a new clutch whilst the box was out Materials only - also cost them 5 weeks of loan Subaru forrestor.
She drives a treat now -and new wing paint work is indistinguishable from the other panels.

Cheers for update - glad you've got it back...so it was 1100 for 1 gear and synchro change? Ouch...
Since mine only crunches some of the time (usually when racing someone from the lights or something, when you need her most...lol) in 3rd and 5th, think I'll leave it for a bit...doesn't sound cheap.
Agree re accidents...I'd expect them to offer a reduction or something though, due to delay in getting your car back - which I'm sure is much improvement on the loan motor!!
