Default Replaced gearbox and diff...Now the handling feels 'loose'

I've replaced the original gearbox and diff on MY00 Turbo with a MY98 STi gearbox and diff after blowing up 2nd gear. Now, the handling of the car feels a little 'loose'. The car is not as planted as it was before. It oversteers and strangely understeers a little more?!

What could cause this? Has the split of power changed? Could there be something wrong with the setup? Any help would be appreciated!

have you used a matching gearbox and rear diff?? as JDM cars have totally different diff ratios and are not compatible with a Euro spec car...............

if you have then its probably just the power split difference your experiencing, JDM cars are more 'rear end' than Euro ones...............

Alyn,

I was always lead to believe that the split was the same for JDM and UK?

Whats the difference in the split between a UK and say an MY98 WRX?

EURO cars have a slightly more front biased torque split , hence the more inherent understeer character that these cars have

Silly question but how do you know if you have a matching gearbox and rear diff? Is there a way to know just from driving the car?

I don't believe so, but obviously running a non-matched setup will put strain on the centre diff and do all kinds of starnge things to the handling (as the front and rear wheels try to rotate at different speeds). It's not the power split front to rear that concerns you here, but the final drive ratio of the box and diff.
Your best bet is to get the serial numbers of the gearbox and diff then check the final drive for both, at least that way you can check that everything's ok.
