Default Need a new clutch - suggestions on where to go?

After 160,000 miles, it's time to call it a day....the clutch has got to be changed!

I've been given a quote of £550 + VAT from the local Subaru dealer, who said that if they needed to skim the flywheel, this would be extra! (No hint of slipping or shudder at the moment, just a noisy release bearing).

I've also contacted API who could change for a standard clutch for cheeper, or an uprated one for a similar (but still cheeper) price to the dealer.

Car is a fairly standard MY93 WRX with full decat and ScoobyECU, so I guess is running somewhere in the 260 to 280bhp region. I assume that a standard clutch would be quite happy.

My dilema is - do I pay lots and go to the local dealer, or pay a bit less and head up the Fosse Way and pay API a visit? Or does anyone know of anywhere else within a sensible-ish distance from Bristol I could go to?

Thanks for any help,

Dave

API have a sky high reputation.
You do not get that for nothing on here!

Fit the uprated exedy David does and 'fit-n-forget'.

Worth it.

I agree with Graham's advice.

Fit an API Exedy uprated, it's well worth it. Got one of those in my car along with one of their lightened flywheels and it's great.

David:
As you know, changing the box this Xmas, and the AP organic will be coming out after 3 years of perfect operation, as in perfect. Will change it only out of maintenance (and maybe a lighter flywheel, though i will take some convincing to put a lightweight in there..)
How do you feel about the Exedy v the AP organic bearing in mine the abuse I put them through hillclimbing?

pm if you would rather.

Rumour is they are one of the same?

Thumbs up

Went to API yesterday to get the clutch changed. Decided to go for the standard clutch, and also got talked into getting a lightened flywheel too!

The old clutch still had an amount of friction material left on it (I'm obviously not getting my money's worth out of it?!) but the rest of the assembly seemed like it had pretty much had it.

Very nice, helpful, friendly service - even got dropped off in Leamington for the afternoon.

Many thanks for your help David & co, and I think I did notice the quicker pick-up on the way home
