Castrol Syntrax (75w90). Gearbox 3.5l, rear diff 0.85l (or 0.8 can't remember, in any case you can't over fill it).

Does the box and the rear diff use the same grade oil - Castrol Syntrax (75w90) ?

Cheers,

Question

would it be the same oil for the diff in my '99 impreza estate?
think it needs an oil change... the loud rumbling whiney noise gives it away

What about Fuchs Titan Gear Syn 75W-90? Seems to meet the same specs as Castrol Syntrax and is also a semi-synth, but a fair bit cheaper. I find Syntrax makes the box nice and smooth for a year or 18 months but then starts to go off. I'm only doing low miles so would expect it to be good throughout the 2 year service interval, hence thinking of trying something different.

To answer the Q above, 75W90 or thereabouts is what you want in your Impreza box too, yes.
