Noticed recently (over the past 6 weeks-or-so) that after starting up my car - MY93 WRX - first thing in the morning, the idle speed can be rather erratic and fast.
It idles between 1,500 & up to 2,100 rpm, wavering around from time to time. However, once the thermostat opens (and the temp gauge comes off the cold stop) the idle speed is fine.
It used to idle at a steady 1,200rpm on a cold start, the only things that have changed recently are cam belt, move to Optimax (from Shell SUL), and several weeks of a 150 mile commute (although I think this problem started before the high miles).
Anyone have any ideas? The problem seems worse the colder the weather - could it be a problem with the air flow sensor?

but it sounds more like the coolant temp sender, not the gauge sender. the one for the Ecu...
positioned on the r/h rear of inlet manifold.
