Default technical diff repair

After my rear 4.4 sti v3 diff whining for some time i decided to take it apart to investigate, this is what I found was damaged

Is this part removable/repairable?

Also David at API has told me that I should put my legacy viscous lsd into this diff why would this be a benifit over the standard sti diff?
Many thanks
Damien

i thought the Sti had a visc diff in the rear

That's dissapointed me too.

David is an expert, so i would just do as he says.
Must check my reference books!
Be interested in how much the cost is to supply/set-up/oil if you don't mind.

Graham.

Thats the pinion and it is knackered. Time for another diff I am afraid.

The reason that l said to swap the centre is because I was told that you could see right through, with just a cross shaft in view. If there is a crosshaft then it must be a free diff.

Either replace it for another diff or get it repaired properly...diffs have a very hard time!...

APIDavid, out of interest what oil do you recommend for the Scooby diffs?..Up until now I've been using Castrol Syntrax in my 99 gearbox and rear diff and it gave a hugh improvement in gearchange, as found by many on here...I also run a uk STI MY04 with ppp...would you put Syntrax in the gearbox and rear diff of this car?...Maybe something better in rear diff perhaps?....Your thoughts very welcome!

Crusher, I make a point of never nominating a brand of oil, as those sort of threads seem to attract the worst of Scoobynetters and I cannot be bothered to fight my corner as to why I said, what I did.

Except that; if you have a plated LSD it needs the correct type of oil or it will become noisy on lock [ applies to front or rear ]

Otherwise use a good quality synthetic 75W / 90 in either the diff or axle.

Good luck David APi
