Default knocking on plated rear diff.

HI GUYS, FRIEND HAS 96 STI TYPE RA HAS LOUD KNOCKING COMING FROM PLATED DIFF AT REAR. BOUGHT FROM TOWNEND GARAGE 3 YEARS AGO HAS ALWAYS HAD NOISE AT LOW SPEED CORNERING AND ON FULL LOCK. HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS NORMAL BUT OTHERS SAY NOT. ANY ANSWERS OR ADVICE. THANKS BILLY.

Yeah, mine does this too at slow speed turning 90 degrees into driveways for example. It's more of a twanging kind of sound (tension being releaved).

Has the centre diff been in the open position when these sounds have been occuring? Coz in my experience it's doing tight turns at slow speed with the diff semi-locked that produces more of a loud knocking.

Hi guys, ive got just that happening on mine, when the cars warm and im doing slow turns say in to car parks the knocking scared the carp out of me sounded V expensive, this normal then ? Only happens when turning, when i straighten up the car all is well.
