Default High pitched whine on overrun in 5th

This only happens in 5th gear (top) and sounds just like electrical noise does when you have your stereo on, but not so you can hear it.

High pitched whine which changed pitch with speed.

It isn't electrical noise before you suggest it.......it is deffo mechanical and sounds like it is coming from the gearbox area.

I recently got a new clutch and flywheel, so suspected that, but it would happen in all gears then, so I'm guessing something unique to top gear.

Maybe a gearbox oil change is overdue. Never had one in the last 30K miles. On this subject....what about rear diff oil too. Is it the same oil? 75/90 I believe.

Any sensible input much appreciated.

Hi i have the same whine on 5th gear on my subaru. Checked the oil level and it has been over filled so i was wondering if it was done on purpose to cover up some problem? Ive had the car a couple of months and its a 1998 model.

Sounds like a job for some place with a nice lift and a good set of tools.

Is it a big job to check Steven? Might have to find other work to do at the same time, to justify the use of a lift and expertise. (if ya know what I mean)

Suppose it'as a bigger job if the nut comes off!! More expensive almost certainly.

Hi
I've had something like this for a while now. Only happens in 5th gear and appears at 50 mph but fairly quite. Appears again at about 65 and then increases in loundness until c.70 mph, declines and is gone by 80.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
