Default 2.5 ltr converstion clutch required or not????

I have a jap spec JDM impreza 2.0ltr wrx sti8!
It has already been tuned up to 310ft/lb of torque 321BHP which is what this car is capable of doing without any major changes. It is currently sitting in a garage getting a 2.5ltr bottom end put on it from america and i am worried that the original wrx sti clutch will not be able to withstand the new power of around 450 ft/lb of torque and 400BHP. If anyone can please give me any kind of information where this is concerned! I am prepaired to get a clutch done if required!!! But the garage is saying that i really dont have to if the clutch i have is ok! All i need to know is if any of yous out there have been in this situation before and any advice would be apreciated.

If you're trusting them to rebuild your engine then surely you trust their advice on a clutch?

What turbo are you running? If all you're doing is swapping out the bottom end then don't expect over 400bhp.

IMHO:
It will be the torque that overcomes the grip of the clutch.
You are going through a lot of work and expense here, and there are 2 options:
1
Leave the stock Sti clutch in and wait to see if all is well. 'Normal' driving will be kind to the car.
When it slips, change to an AP/Exeedy Organic etc @ £350 ish + fitting
2
Do the change now. The fitting charge is not there as it is all apart!
3
Another outlook:
Will the transmission tolerate a 450 lbft torque if it is the stock Sti 5 speeder?
Then that is box and clutch at that time.

I'm not sure what torque the OE clutches in the 6 speed can take, but judging by all the 450 lbft cars I know - they have uprated the clutch. Now whether that because its the sensible thing to do whilst the engine is off - hence not having to pay for labour (or waste an afternoon) again when/if the OE clutch slips, I don't know.

Most of the 450 lbft cars have similar power, if not 500hp - what is the new spec of yours?

Surely for peace of mind, it would be worth uprating it while its apart, how many miles has the old one done so far.

One of the worst parts of having clutch changed is the downtime on your car as well as the hundreds of pounds getting the git fitted.

IMHO of course

Taking a box out (especially in a hurry) is a real bast@rd of a job, and I'd avoid it if i can having does it 3 times, once to change a clutch.
The 6 speeder has a bigger diameter clutch and flywheel as the 6 speeder's bell housing is larger to fit it.
I would think an AP/Exeedy Organic would be good for 450 lbft, but i doubt AP would warrant it.
Seems to me that the clutches Lateral sell are highly rated (excuse the pun)

The clutch has done 19k as far as i know!
The oil pump and water pump are also being upgraded while the bottom end i s done!
Its the 6 speed box thats on the car!
I hope this helps answer any extra questions you all have!

Thanks for the replys so far!
Think i may take the advice yous have said to get the clutch done the now save me money later as i have been told the original clutch is prone to going very easily on the wrx sti8 JDM anyways!!!

One other thing!
What clutch do yous reckon i should get!
Thier are some very dear clutches out thier but i have been told i can get a good one for around 500 fitted while the bottom end is getting done!
I dont remember the name of the clutch or manufacturer but i can find out on monday! If anyone neads to know!!!
Thanks again!!!!

There are options to fit a "modified" oil pump, but it's the first time I've come across an upgraded "water pump".

Just make sure you know what you're getting, before parting with any money !

while the bottom end is out, you should be paying the price of the clutch kit ONLY, no fitting should be charged, especially if you are forking out that much in the first place

Why are you replacing your 2ltr with a crappy 2.5ltr bottom end thats not as strong as your original 2ltr?
Weird....
But basically back to the subject, there is a guy on smacs who's running just under 400bhp on his MY01 Spec C, with 415lbs of torque, on the 2ltr engine.
Though you do refer to your car as an STi8, so i take it its a bugeye 2002 model then?

Exedy or OSG twin plate clutch. Wouldnt think of putting any other clutch on if your aiming for 450lbft plus.

If you've only done 19k on your clutch then don't bother changing it IMO, should be plenty of life in it. Unless your gonna start doing 5k launches at every traffic light and down to the drag strip every weekend

This wouldn't be the JDM siting outside a certain "tuners" workshop in Aberdeen would it?

Default STi 8 Is not the bugeye model

In reference to Tony's post the STI8 is not the bugeye 2002 model . The Bugeye 2002 model is the STI7. And please, don't get me started on how much BHP and Tourque increase there will be by putting in the 2.5 litre.

Thanks muchly
